Common piston failures include breakage, erosion, and wear. Pistons are consumable parts and are relatively inexpensive. In agricultural machinery maintenance, pistons are generally not repaired but replaced directly. However, before replacing new parts, the causes of piston damage should be identified and analyzed to prevent the same failure from recurring.

The piston casting machine manufacturer reminds everyone, If the piston top has severe carbon deposits, it is easy to cause hot fire and abnormal combustion in the engine cylinder; if the ring groove has severe carbon deposits, the piston ring is easy to get stuck in the ring groove, leading to a decrease in cylinder sealing performance, so the carbon deposits in the piston and cylinder should be removed regularly. Carbon deposits on the top of the piston can be removed with a scraper. If there are carbon deposits in the piston ring groove, the damaged old piston ring can be ground into a suitable shape to remove the carbon deposits, but care should be taken not to scratch the bottom of the piston ring groove. Chemical methods can also be used, that is, the piston with severe carbon deposits is immersed in a decarbonizing agent solution 2 ~ 3 min ,The solution temperature is maintained at 80 ~ 95 。After removing the piston, use a brush or cotton cloth to wipe off the carbon deposits, and finally rinse with hot water containing 0.1 % ~ 2.3 % potassium dichromate, and blow dry.

After removing the piston, check the top for any abnormalities. The piston casting machine manufacturer says, If there is obvious indentation or even cracks due to impact, promptly find out and eliminate the cause of the failure. When the engine is operating, the piston is damaged by impact, usually caused by too small valve clearance, incorrect valve timing, broken valve springs, etc. This will cause the piston to collide with the valve, or foreign objects to fall into the cylinder during maintenance. For a damaged piston, if the top is dented, it can continue to be used without cracks. If cracks or holes are found, a new part must be replaced. The damaged piston should be replaced with a new one.

The piston bears the combustion pressure in the cylinder and transmits this force to the crankshaft through the piston pin and connecting rod. In addition, the piston, together with the cylinder head and cylinder wall, forms the combustion chamber.

The piston top is an integral part of the combustion chamber, so it is often made into different shapes. Gasoline engine pistons mostly use flat tops or concave tops, making the combustion chamber structure compact, the heat dissipation area small, and the manufacturing process simple.

The piston head is the part above the piston pin seat. Piston rings are installed on the piston head to prevent high-temperature and high-pressure gas from escaping into the crankcase and prevent oil from escaping into the combustion chamber. Most of the heat absorbed by the piston top is also transferred to the cylinder through the piston head and then transferred away through the cooling medium.
